Turn Your Yard into an Oasis with Hillside Landscaping

by B.E. Conrad
The right landscaping can transform virtually any front or back yard into a peaceful oasis, but landscaping challenges can greatly increase when the back yard is built into a steep hillside. Fortunately there are a number of excellent landscaping ideas designed for just such a situation. Landscaping a hillside can involve some extra work, but a beautifully landscaped hillside can be a delight to behold.

Of course the first step toward creating that beautifully designed hillside is to clear away any brush and other debris that may have accumulated. It is important to clear away any weeds, brush and the like in order to make a fresh start for a beautiful hillside.

When it comes time to replant the hillside, the choice of plants is extremely important. When planting on a hillside, it is important to look at ways to prevent soil erosion and other problems that can be created by the steep slope. In order to reduce problems with erosion, be sure to plant lots of ground cover plants and shrubs, and also to use plenty of heavy mulch. The mulch will help to insulate those plants from the cold, while at the same time preventing the seeds from spouting too fast in the event of unseasonably warm weather.

Keeping moisture in the ground is another important consideration of hillside landscaping. A steep slope can lead to a fast lost of moisture, and an unwanted accumulation of water in other areas of the yard. It is a good idea to look for soils that hold moisture well, and to plant in a way that will reduce the problems caused by the runoff of moisture.

As with any landscaping job, however, color is a paramount concern as well. It is important to design the hillside garden with a variety of bright and vibrant colors. The colors chosen should immediately catch the eye, while at the same time working well together. It is also important to consider other elements of the landscape, such as trees, shrubs and bushes, when choosing the right flowers for your new hillside oasis.

There are a number of great landscaping effects that are perfect for use on the hillside landscape. One of the most beautiful, and most useful, is a retaining wall. Building a retaining wall into the landscape will not only provide protection from erosion, but security and good looks as well. Homeowners have a wealth of choices when it comes to materials and supplies, and the only limit is imagination. A beautifully designed retaining wall can help to solve many of the problems associated with hillside landscaping, while at the same time providing a sense of style and timeless charm.

A backyard shelter, such as a gazebo, also makes a great addition to the hillside landscape. Providing your family with a beautiful place to get away from the stresses of everyday life is a great way to make your back yard even more inviting. With a little bit of imagination and some hard work, your new back yard getaway may just become the favorite part of the house.
