Home Automation Controller Installation

by DoItYourself Staff

The installation of a home automation controller is done by a professional installer. This process involved some knowledge in computer and electrical systems and can only be done right by a person with the experience and expertise in this type of installation. A professional home automation controller can make sure that the system in installed correctly and working as designed in order to ensure that every aspect of your home automation system works. Hiring an installer will save you on time and any unnecessary additional expense if the installation is wrong.

What is a Home Automation System?

A home automation controller is used to control the different aspects of your home's operation. This includes turning on and off lights, setting the security system, turning on and off certain appliances by voice command and other tasks that can be programmed into the controller. The process for installing the system begins with an assessment being made of the types of commands and controls needed for the system. Once these determinations have been made, the installer can go through the next steps of the installation process.

Determining the Wiring Needs for the System

The next step of the home automation controller installation process for the installer is to assess the wiring that is available for the systems installation. The wiring available for the system may need to be upgraded in order to accommodate the different command nodes that will be added to the system. This may be the most labor intensive part of the installation process for the home automation system.

Testing the Wiring and Controller Connections

After the wiring has been updated to accommodate the system, the installer will test the wiring to make sure that they are delivering impulses to the different areas of the home. The installer will also check the connections to the different controllers that will be connected to the home automation system. The controllers for any appliance, the security system, water, gas and other processes will need to be connected to the wiring.

Attaching the Home Automation Controller

With all of the wiring and controllers tested the installer will continue the installation process by connecting the main home automation controller to the wiring. The installer will make sure that the controller is properly connected and secured before running a test of the system. The system test will determine if there is any bad wiring that went undetected during the testing phase that needs to be replaced. Once this testing has been completed, the installer will turn off and on each of the command nodes and determine how the system is working.

Completing the Installation of the Home Automation Controller

The home automation controller is mounted and the individual remote controls are programmed during the final step in the process. The remotes are placed in different parts of the house and tested again to see that they are working correctly. The system is locked and ready for the home owner to use.
