Home Brewing Wine: How to Reduce the Yeast Flavor
Home brewing wine is a wonderful hobby but it’s one that’s as much art as it is science. Yeast helps the fruit used in the wine ferment, but there can also be a problem with that. When home brewing wine the flavor of the yeast can sometimes seem excessive. It’s something that can be cured in your next batch of wine.
Wine Yeast
Many people use regular baking yeast when home brewing wine. It’s cheap and easy to buy. One way to reduce the yeast flavor in wine is to use wine yeast, which is specially formulated for home brewing wine. Just sprinkle over the top of the wine. It will help the fermentation process, but it’s just enough to do that and no more. It’s available at stores that sell home brewing equipment.
Amounts
Use just enough yeast to start the fermentation process when home brewing wine. More than that and the flavor of the yeast will come through in the wine itself, altering the taste. It’s important to use the right amount of sugar as well as the correct amount of yeast. Too much sugar will weaken the yeast and you’ll need to use more yeast to kick start the fermentation process.
