Home Energy Conservation Checklist
Every homeowner must consider the vast benefits of home energy conservation. With a few simple steps, we can all incorporate energy efficiency in our everyday lives. The true worth of wasted energy is very high, because of the high costs associated with energy generation. The following checklist covers some of the most crucial components of energy consumption, and what you can do to see a marked reduction in your energy bills.
1 – Minimize Unwanted Energy
Most homes have appliances in every room, be it a bedroom, the kitchen or living room. Perhaps the most important aspect of home energy conservation is to keep track of your energy usage, and to identify areas where you can achieve a reduction. Make sure that each member of your family turns off an appliance after using it. Minimize standby power consumption by unplugging devices that are not in use and turn off all lights in unoccupied areas.
2 – Lower the Thermostat in Winter
On a cold winter day, you may hike up the thermostat by a few degrees to enjoy a warm climate indoors. However, this will affect your energy bill considerably. Lowering the thermostat by a few degrees can save you a lot of money and energy. Wearing a sweater can go a long way to keep you warm.
3 – Lower Air Conditioner Usage in the Summer
In the summer, avoid excessive use of the air conditioner. Dress appropriately, and use alternate solutions such as an electric fan or ceiling fan.
4 – Use Sunlight Effectively
Sunlight streaming in through your windows can effectively warm up the interior of your home. Maximize the intake of sunlight on winter days. During the night, minimize heat transfer to the outside of your home, by covering the windows with heavy drapes. In the summer, reduce the heating effect indoors, by covering the windows and blocking sunlight during the warmest parts of the day.
5 – Save Energy when Cooking
When you cook, use small appliances such as toaster ovens and microwave ovens when possible. Never use a large oven for heating food or cooking a small meal. It is also a good idea to cook larger quantities of food at one time, so you do not have to spend energy on heating up the range or oven.
6 – Lower Energy Consumed by Appliances
Use energy efficient refrigerators and freezers. Never leave these appliances open for longer than is necessary, and avoid opening them too frequently, to prevent loss of cold air.
7 – Wash Dishes Efficiently
If you wash dishes by hand, avoid running the water non-stop. Washing the dishes in a sink filled with water and soap is a more energy-friendly alternative. If you use the dishwasher, scrape off any residue before you place the dishes inside the appliance. Avoid using the drying feature. When washing dishes or clothes, use cold water where possible.
8 – Use Water Efficiently
Use low flow faucets and shower-heads in the bathroom. This can save gallons of water and also the energy required to heat it up. Also, reduce the time you spend in the shower.
