Keep Away from Moisture
In moist and humid environments, wood furniture is prone to swelling and warping. You will need to clean your wood furniture regularly to prevent mold from forming. Use a dehumidifier to lessen the affects of moisture in the air. If possible, choose new wood furniture that has been cut in such a way that it resists warping even in humid conditions.
Keep Out of Direct Sunlight
When positioned under the sun's rays, your wood furniture can dry and crack. If nothing else, it will age quickly, and restorative polishes and waxes may not be able to help. If furniture must be placed near a window that gets direct sun or under a skylight, cover it whenever possible with an opaque tablecloth, sheet or tarp. Keep curtains drawn whenever possible, or move the furniture to a place that is cool, dry and artificially lit.
Be Proactive
* When moving furniture, lift, don't drag.
* Use placemats and coasters to protect your tables from spills and scratches
* Use trivets to prevent heat damage from hot dishes.
* Do not position furniture in front of radiators or space heaters.
* Regularly wipe your wood surfaces with a damp non-abrasive cloth to prevent dust accumulation.
* Use plastic cushion and seat back covers on chairs to protect against stains.
* When storing, use cloth or rubber corner covers to protect against damage.
