Home Remedies for Dogs: Diarrhea

by DoItYourself Staff

There are a number of home remedies for dogs with diarrhea which do not involve a visit to the veterinarian.

Causes of Diarrhea in Dogs

Just as with humans, a dog’s intestinal tract can sometimes become irritated, and the diarrhea is a result of their body trying to accommodate the underlying cause. It can be the result of a food allergy, bacteria, or something they ate which simply did not agree with them.

Initial Treatment

A good first step is to immediately put your pet on a bland diet for a few days. Instead of their normal food, serve them plain white rice with boiled chicken or boiled hamburger. Make sure you remove the skin from the chicken and do not use any spices. Try feeding them three small meals a day, and then gradually begin reintroducing their normal food back into their diet.

Treating With Medication

Veterinarians generally agree that it is safe and effective to give your dog small amounts of Pepto Bismol to help calm their digestive tract. If your dog is taking other medications, check with your veterinarian prior to treating them.

It’s also very important that your dog drink enough water during this time. Diarrhea can be very dehydrating, so make sure your pet has access to fresh water at all times.
