Home Security System Cost Guide

by DoItYourself Staff

When considering home security system cost, keep in mind that you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars for a professional home security firm to install a system. Home security is something that can be accomplished for a relatively low cost. How-to information is available online to assist you with the installation and give you tips for success. To do it yourself, you will be working with electrical and electronics, and as with all wiring projects, follow instructions carefully so the end result functions properly.

Are "Specials" Really Worth It?

Some professional home security firms offer specials to install a security system for as little as $0, ranging to several hundred. However, these providers charge a monthly fee for the monitoring service, so as time passes, the amount of money you pay continually increases. They might also require a contract with early cancellation fees. That is not to say they don’t provide a good service, but you can do the job yourself – paying only for the materials and maintenance, and avoid monthly fees.

Do-it-Yourself

If you want to do it yourself, there are basically two ways to go. The first is to purchase a DIY home security package. These range from under $100 to over $1000 depending on the brand, quality and features. For the inexpensive packages, including you will usually receive an alarm, a number of window/door sensors, and perhaps one or more remote controls and motion sensors. All mounting accessories should be included. Many of these packages offer remote alarms that require no wiring, but know that radio transmission is sometimes prone to inference by other devices such as cell phones or a wireless computer network.

The second option for do-it-yourselfers is to build the system from its component parts. This may end up being more expensive than a package, but not necessarily. It will definitely be less expensive than a professional home system. For instance, a 15-point system installed by an industry leader will cost over $1100. The same number window/door sensors or switches, an alarm, batteries, and the necessary wiring will cost a fraction of that. If you want to install a wireless system from the ground up, that will be more than wired system, but still less than a professional installation. The advantage of a wired system is that there will be no interference in transmission of signals. As long as you keep the wires and other components in good working condition, it will last for a long time.

You have options when you want to install a home security system, from professional service to do-it-yourself setup. Home security packages might be the way to go, as they should come with everything you need and detailed instructions. You can, however, build it yourself with a little wiring knowledge and the right components and tools. Don’t think you have to spend a fortune in fees to safeguard your home – do it yourself!
