Home security system equipment includes many different components. A set may include cameras, window and door sensors, motion detectors, a remote panel and a base controller.

How Security Systems Work

Window and door sensors are the most common components in most security systems. They each have parts backed with adhesive for easy installation. One part of the sensor sticks to the actual window or door, and another part sticks to the frame. The sensors send a signal to the base controller if the door or window opens, or if the window breaks.

The base station can then either set off an alarm or alert a third party, like a professional security service who will investigate and possibly contact the police.

Motion Detectors

Motion detectors are an inexpensive addition to any home security system. They can work in one of 2 ways. They can either trigger a light or localized alarm, or they can send a signal to a base station that will alert your security service. One drawback is that motion detectors can be difficult to position so they aren't triggered by animals.

Cameras

Though security cameras can be expensive, they offer some major benefits. When potential burglars see well-placed cameras, they will be discouraged from breaking into your home. In case a robbery does occur, cameras capture action at all entrances to your house. This can help reduce your insurance premiums because of the increased odds that the burglars will be found and you will get your stolen goods back.

Cameras also require a television and a recording device. Many modern cameras can easily be hooked up to any home computer. This not only works well, but it saves money. Some cameras are triggered by motion detectors, and many wireless models are available.

What Home Security System Equipment You Need

To have a functioning home security system you will need a base station and at least one security component. A remote access panel allows you to activate and deactivate the alarm system from a specific location. Install a remote panel close to the door you most often to enter and leave the house.

Doors and window sensors provide the most reliable security. Without these, the potential for someone to get into your home increases. Cameras both deter criminals and increase the chances that you'll catch anyone who does break into your home. Motion sensors can be a good addition, but if you have any outdoor pets or live in an area where animals roam free, avoid them.
