Home Water Damage Prevention: Maintaining the Dishwasher

by DoItYourself Staff

Preventing home water damage should be at the top of your priority list as a homeowner. Dealing with a serious water damage problem can be overwhelming and take a big bite out of your budget. One way that you can help prevent water damage is to properly maintain your dishwasher. Here are a few things to consider about maintaining your dishwasher.

Fixing the Seal

One of the most common ways that a dishwasher causes water damage is when water gets around the seal on the door. If you notice water coming out of the seal, you need to replace it immediately. You should be able to take out the rubber seal and purchase a new one just like it. Then install it and avoid any water coming out the front of the dishwasher.

Level the Dishwasher

You also need to make sure that your dishwasher stays level. Adjust the feet on the bottom of the dishwasher and make sure that it is completely level. This will help you avoid any water coming out of the dishwasher at unnecessary times.

Prevent Clogs

When loading the dishwasher, make sure to get rid of any food that might be on the dishes. If you see any food that could clog up the dishwasher, remove it quickly.
