Homemade Costume Ideas for Babies

by DoItYourself Staff

If you are going to a costume party with your baby boy or girl, a homemade costume opens wide avenues of creativity while saving you the cost of a pre-made costume. Making Halloween costumes can be simple if you have the right tools.

Bumblebee Costume

One way to make a costume for your baby is to find a yellow, one-piece pajama outfit and carefully paint black stripes on it using fabric paint, and making sure that the paint doesn’t seep through by stuffing the outfit first with paper or another substance. You can make wings out of thinner cardboard or tulle, and wrap pipe cleaners around a headband to make antennae, finishing off with pom-poms hot-glued to the top of the pipe cleaners.

Alien Costume

An alien costume would be similar to the bumblebee costume in that you would need a one-piece green jumper, preferably one that comes with a hood. Dress your baby in the green jumper and create antennas in the same way you would with the bumblebee outfit, only with green pipe cleaners. If you want to put face paint on your baby, make sure that it is non-toxic and edible, as the paint may end up in their mouth. Cut out two big pieces of cardboard and attach them to the bottom and the top of your baby’s stroller, decorating it with Christmas lights or construction paper cutouts of windows or planets.

However you decide to dress your baby for Halloween, it is important to make sure that nothing on their costumes will be able to hurt them in any way.
