Homemade Grout Cleaner vs Commercial Cleaning Products

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1/3 cup ammonia
  • 7 cups water

Homemade grout cleaners and commercial versions both perform the same task of extending your bathroom’s cosmetic life but using homemade cleaners can give you a few more benefits than those premade for sale. Learn how to make a grout cleaner that just works as good as those found in stores using baking soda, vinegar, and ammonia, and at a cheaper price than environmentally safe commercial cleaners.

Homemade Grout Cleaner Recipe

Mixing and Application

Use a spray bottle to apply the mixture of all listed ingredients to dingy grout, wipe it off, but don’t rinse.

Bleach Grout Cleaner

Adding 1 part bleach to 5 parts in a container, scrubbing the grout with a brush, then letting it sit for several minutes, and finally rinsing the bleach away will remove mold and mildew from the grout. Never mix bleach with the vinegar and ammonia previously listed. Doing so can cause the release of toxic fumes.

Both homemade formulas are safe to use around pets and children when mixed properly, something you can’t always be too sure of when using store bought cleaners. Always read labels and heed warnings that advise against mixing the cleaner with other substances and suggest the use of protective gear before use.

With both homemade and commercial grout cleaners, work in a well ventilated area.
