- Disposable Stick for Application
Epoxy glue is extremely strong and versatile glue. Unlike many other types of adhesives, epoxy glue has sufficient strength and great adhesive properties to attach different types of materials or objects to one another, such as wood to metal. Due to its flexibility, you would typically use epoxy glue to bond objects other glues would fail to stick together including non-porous materials like glass. Because epoxy glue is waterproof, it is also a good adhesive to use outside.
Step 1: Determine the Correct Epoxy Adhesive
Using the wrong type of epoxy glue may permanently damage the objects you are trying to stick together. It is therefore imperative that you are cautious in which epoxy adhesive you purchase as it comes in different forms for different materials. Always read the label prior to purchase. Also, decide whether you need epoxy glue in a paste formula or a liquid one. The size of the area you are bonding should establish this decision as pastes are more appropriate and quicker for sticking larger areas whilst liquids are better for smaller jobs.
Step 2: Clean the Area Prior to Application
Ensure the objects to be glued are free from any dust and debris as applying epoxy glue to materials covered in dirt may hinder effectiveness. Use a damp, clean cloth and wipe the area clean of any fragments or dust particles.
Step 3: Mix the Glue
Always use protective gloves before handling epoxy glue as it is extremely difficult to remove from skin. Proceed to mix the adhesive in a clean mixing bowl, preferably one which can be thrown away after use. Using the packaging the glue was enclosed in is a good alternative if you do not want to ruin a bowl. Follow the manufacturer's instructions provided with the epoxy glue to know the exact mixing procedure, although the majority of epoxy adhesives require mixing in equal parts.
Step 4: Apply the Glue
Apply the epoxy glue as soon as you finish mixing it to ensure that it does not go hard and unmanageable. Use a tool which you do not mind throwing away afterwards and smear the glue over the object. While epoxy glue should be applied quite sparingly, make sure that the whole of the surface is covered to ensure a good bond will occur.
Step 5: Join the Objects Together
Using sufficient pressure, carefully hold the objects which you have glued together. Although epoxy glue can take hours and even days to dry, it is advisable you keep holding the glued joints in place and retain some pressure for several minutes. Gently release and place the article in a warm, dry area until it is completely dry. Refrain from manhandling or using the object for several days to allow the epoxy glue to harden and maximize in strength.
Step 6: Clean Any Unwanted Blots of Glue
If you notice any epoxy glue has stuck to an area you do not want it to be, quickly wipe it off with soap and water before it has a chance to dry.
