How can I locate a transmission fluid leak?

by DoItYourself Staff

Loss of fluid caused by a transmission fluid leak can lead to transmission slippage and eventually to transmission failure. To avoid these problems, you should check for possible leaking of fluid from your transmission. However, you'll need to know where to look for signs of such leaks and to learn which leaking fluids are from your transmission.

From beneath your car, locate the bottom surface of the transmission. If you are unsure where it is located, check in your user's manual. Then, examine the bottom surface of the transmission for dripping, red fluid. Check, also, the surface on which your car is parked. If you find red fluid, you'll know it is from your transmission.
