How dangerous is roofing tar to my skin?

by DoItYourself Staff

How dangerous roofing tar is to your skin depends on what temperature it is. Since roofing tar does contain coal tar and other distillates, it is a known carcinogen, so you will want to get it off your skin as quickly as possible using a warm water and soap mixture. Never use anything stronger than a mild soap to remove it, however. It may take repeated washings, but it can be done. If the roofing tar is hot, then you run the risk of second- or third-degree burns, so always be on the safe side when working with roofing tar.
