How do I choose hinges for building toy boxes?

by DoItYourself Staff

When it comes to toy boxes, safety is paramount. If left unmonitored for even a moment, children can get in a multitude of scrapes around dangerous furniture. Therefore, the best type of hinge to use on a child's toy box will be a counterbalance hinge, which will slowly close the lid rather than slamming it shut. This reduces the chance of your child getting his fingers trapped when he takes out a toy. Another option would be to use regular hinges, but add cushion around the rim of the lid and the top of the box. In the event that the lid does close quickly, no fingers will be smashed.
