How do I cut door molding for my exterior door trim?

by DoItYourself Staff

Door molding consists of 4 parts and cost about $1.13 per board foot. Each sidepiece is about 84 inches and the header and footer pieces are 36 inches, so you will need 13 board feet for this project, whose cost will be around $15. To complete the job, remove the header--crown piece--that fits over the door. It ties the side moldings together visually. To complete the job, the footer is removed, if your home is equipped with one (it is the piece of molding at the bottom). Before installing the new molding, you must cut a 45-degree notch at the top of each sidepiece and 2 in the header piece. The footer just needs to be cut to length (36 inches). Use a box saw with a 45-degree setting, or a table saw to trim the wood. A coping saw can also handle the job.
