How do I ground duplex outlets?

by DoItYourself Staff

If you are installing duplex outlets, the first thing you need to do, for safety purposes, is hook up the ground wire. This is usually a green wire in new wiring schemes. Black and white wires normally carry the current to and from the outlet. The ground wire is like an insurance policy for your outlets that lead current back to the ground or a safe place. Bend a small hook in the end of the ground wire and hook it around the screw marked "ground" in your outlet box. Tighten down the screw. Then connect all other wires. You outlet will be properly grounded and safe.
