How do you read an electric meter box?

by DoItYourself Staff

An electric meter box is easy to read as there are only four dials on it and they run from left to right. Let’s say that your electric company was able to make the last reading and it came up to be 9011. Next, let’s say for some reason they can not read your meter, but send you a card asking you to read it. Since they already have a baseline, they know you can’t go backwards. Look at the meter and approximate where the first meter line is in between the 9 and the 0. The second meter line should now be between the 0 and 1, so you will have to note where it is to the best of your ability. The third line should be between 1 and 2 or 2 and 3,d so mark it on the card. The fourth line should be in the same area, so mark it, too. That’s all there is too it. Just remember to use pencil in case you erase and change one of the readings when asked.
