How Does a Digital Ear Thermometer Work?
A digital ear thermometer is a relatively new concept. Read on to learn how this useful piece of equipment works and how to use it.
How Does it Work?
The digital ear thermometer is similar to a regular thermometer in that it will take an internal temperature of the body, but unlike the standard model, it does not go under the tongue. A digital ear thermometer works by taking the temperature of the tympanic membrane inside the ear, which relates to the core temperature of the body. There are a few issues that can impede the temperature reading. For example, too much wax in the ear can result in an error or an incorrect reading.
How to Use
There are quite a few styles of digital ear thermometers available but most operate on the same basis and can be used orally or anally as well. Be sure about the ways you can use your thermometer by carefully reading the directions that come with it. Most of them have a probe which you will need to wipe clean before use.
You can use rubbing alcohol or soap and water to make sure it is germ free. Never push the thermometer into the ear too hard. Ease it in very gently and wiggle it until it is secure. Too much force can cause harm to the membrane and is very painful. You will get a much quicker reading from a digital ear thermometer, so using it with young children is much easier, as long as they keep still for a few seconds.
