Communication

The X10 system works because it is able to communicate easily between the different components of your home automation system. The system is going to send information through the electrical wiring in your house from a transmitter. The transmitter will send small packets of information through the wires and they will reach the different components of your home automation system. With this system, you can use it to communicate with all of the different components at one time. However, if you want, you can also use it to communicate with an individual component. For example, if you want to turn on a specific light in your house, you could do so with the X10 communication system. 

Precautions

Since you are sending information through electrical wires in your house, you are going to have to make sure that precautions are taken with this system. If the company that is installing the home automation system does not take the proper precautions, the information that you are sending with this system could go out into the main power lines. Because of this, they will need to install a filter where the electricity enters your house. This is going to filter the data that is being transferred through the electrical wires in your house.

Codes

In order to make this system work, a number of four bit codes are used. Each house is going to have its own code. Then, every individual component that is on the home automation system is also going to have a unique code. With larger houses, you will potentially have to use multiple house codes so that every component of the house can have an individual code to work with. When the system is communicating, it is going to send the code combination so that the information knows exactly where to travel to.

Potential Problems

Even though this system is very reliable and is time tested, it does have a few potential problems to be aware of. First of all, it is not the fastest technology out there. When you send a signal, it may take a bit before the signal is processed. Also, if two people send a signal at the same time, one of them may not go through or it could cause problems for the system.
