How far can I move an electrical outlet without using a junction box?

by DoItYourself Staff

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the maximum distance between an electrical outlet and a junction box should be no more than 6 feet. This means that if you are planning on building or modifying the electrical capability of a site, you must have an outlet at 6 feet with junction boxes similarly placed. For example, if you have a multiple outlets at 6 -foot spacing and then want to extend a wall, you will have to install a new junction box and continue the wiring through the new junction box. The good thing about today's junction box is that there are knock out plugs at top and bottom.
