How Long Will Asphalt Roof Shingles Last?

by DoItYourself Staff

Asphalt roof shingles will typically last somewhere between 15 and 20 years. The longevity of the shingles greatly depends on the climate in which they are installed. Asphalt shingles that are located in cooler climates tend to have a longer lifespan than those in hot locations.

The quality of the asphalt shingles also plays a big role in their longevity. Compared to some of the other roofing materials, this is relatively short. For example, slate shingles can last over 100 years when properly installed. Most laminated shingles will last longer as well, with an average lifespan of about 30 years.
