How Phone Cards Work and How to Use Them

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Phone card (international)

Making a lot of international calls can increase your phone costs, so using prepaid phone cards could be the answer. Many of these cards are designed to make phoning foreign countries much cheaper so that it's something you can do more often.

Communication

Communicating is a great way to make relationships last for as long as possible. Just because you are in another country, it doesn't mean that you still can't communicate. Even if you're in a foreign country you can phone your friends and family back home to have a good old natter. If you do this with your cell phone or land line phone then you will quickly find that this is very expensive.

Calling Cards

Calling cards, or prepaid phone cards offer a solution to this problem. These make it possible to make much cheaper calls to people all around the world. Using these calling cards make it possible to talk to family and friends anywhere in the world at a fraction of the cost you would normally have to pay.

There are literally hundreds of different calling cards on offer, each with different fees to different parts of the world. Look at each of these cards to work out which is the cheapest one to use when calling your destination. Also, check out the expiration date; some of the credit will last indefinitely, while others will expire after a few months of inactivity. By finding out about this now you can save a lot of confusion in the future.

Prepaid cards aren't just useful for international calls, they can actually save you money on long distance and even local calls. But how do these actually work?

How Prepaid Phone Cards Work

A prepaid phone card is a simple, yet effective way to dial international numbers. These are purchased either online or from a phone store. You are then given an access number and a Personal Identification Number (PIN). The prepaid cards come loaded with a certain amount of credit as soon as you buy them.

There will often be a choice of access numbers. If you decide to phone the toll free number, then you will normally be charged a higher rate for the privilege. Phoning one of the access numbers will present you with a prompt asking for your prepaid calling card PIN.

Enter the PIN, then dial the number that you want to call. Remember to include the full international dialing code when using these calling cards. Before you make a call you will be told how much it will cost, and how much credit you have left on your phone. It's very easy to use these phone cards.

Why Phone Cards are Cheaper

Lots of people are skeptical about how these calling cards are able to offer such a large discount to international calling. The reason is because these calls are routed over the Internet rather than through the traditional and conventional phone network. The saving is large enough to consider using this simple calling option.
