How Recessed Can Lights are Used in Bathrooms

by DoItYourself Staff

Recessed can lights are great for creating an adequately lit space with little interference with your decor. Using recessed lights in a small bathroom can help to improve the lines and in large bathrooms the recessed can lights will not interfere with colors and decorations, they help to reduce glare, too.

Uses of Recessed Can Lights

Recessed can lights can be mounted in a bathroom and will help to give your bathroom a soft light instead of a severe and overly bright light. Installing recessed lights in your ceiling or wall can be used well if you make sure to mount them near the mirror to help reduce shadows. After all, recessed can lights are contained within the ceiling effectively blocking much of the light. Recessed can lights can also be installed around a tub to create an atmosphere of soothing soft lights, using different colored bulbs to calm yourself after stressful events.

Problems with Recessed Lighting

When you install recessed lighting in a bathroom you expect to have less glare on your mirrors and within the space. You expect to be able to illuminate the space without any visible fixtures to mar your atmosphere. There are troubles though involving recessed lights. In a vanity area of a bathroom recessed lighting is not efficient alone. The wattage allowed in a recessed light is not the same power as you can install in a standard light fixture. This reduces the amount of light that you can produce. Shadows are a large issue that many people experience when they have decided to choose recessed lighting in a room, such as a bathroom, you might not be able to produce ample light for the things you need to do in the bathroom, such as applying make-up or inserting contact lenses.

Ways to Improve Recessed Lighting in a Bathroom

Improving the lighting in a bathroom when you have recessed can lights can be accomplished in a couple different ways. Combining standard diffused lights in addition to the recessed lights can help with shadows. Another alternative, if you have no desire or facilities to install standard lights, is to install recessed eyeball light trim. If you do this then you can direct each recessed light bulb to improve lighting and eliminate shadows on your face or in remote corners of your bathroom. Either solution will help you to improve the light in your bathroom. If neither of these options is agreeable then a lamp may be placed on a shelf for occasional additional lights. Many medicine cabinets are equipped with vanity lights or light kits that can be wired independent of the room lights. Unique mirrors and reflective surfaces can also help to brighten up an otherwise restrictive light scheme. Appropriately placed mirrors, or light colored paint and tile choices will give your room a well lit feeling and also still keep your actual light fixtures hidden securely away, recessed into your ceiling or walls.
