How To Acid Stain Concrete

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Muriatic acid
  • Acid stain
  • Sealer
  • Concrete cleaner
  • Bushes
  • A broom
  • A roller
  • A sprayer

It is easy to create an acid stain concrete floor on your own.

Step 1 – Gather Materials

You will also need safety goggles, gloves and protective clothing.

Step 2 – Clean the Concrete

Mix muriatic acid with water. Use the solution to completely and thoroughly clean the concrete surface.

Step 3 – Apply the Acid Stain

Using a roller or sprayer, apply the acid stain. It works best if you divide the concrete up into sections and apply even strokes that do not overlap (it will leave streaks if you do). Complete each section until you have applied the stain to the entire floor area.

Step 4 – Neutralize the Acid

The acid will react on the concrete. You will next need to neutralize the acid to stop the reaction. Mix baking soda and water to create a thin spray and apply to the floor.

When you have covered the entire floor with the baking soda mixture, then let it dry for 5 minutes. Then spray the entire surface with clean, clear water.

Step 5 – Apply Sealer

Let the floor dry completely, and then apply the sealer with a paint roller. Apply 2 to 3 coats, letting each coat dry between applications.
