How to Adapt a Car Amplifier to a Home Theater Amplifier

by DoItYourself Staff

As the standard of car subwoofers have improved, it sometimes seems that they can offer you greater power than the traditional home theater amplifier. The benefits of great sound quality can make you wish to convert your car amplifier into a home theater amplifier, but a car subwoofer needs to have a 12 volt power supply, which means that it would become damaged if you attempted to plug it into the home theater system directly. Therefore, you need to find a power converter before you hook up the subwoofer to the home theater sound.

Making Car Amplifiers into Home Theater Amplifiers

The most important device for converting a car subwoofer into a home theater amplifier is the power inverter. This technology changes the power from home electricity supplies into a 12 volt outlet. Before plugging the home theater amplifier into the car subwoofer, you will need some speaker wire: the manuals will tell you what type you need. Connect by inserting the wires into the correct terminals, and then use an auxiliary cable to connect the home theater amplifier output and the car subwoofer's input ports.

Once you have connected these ports, try playing some music to ensure that your home theater amplifier is now correctly connected to the car subwoofer device.
