How to Add a Bathroom Mirror Light
what you'll need
- New light fixture
- Screw drivers
- 1mm2 cable
- Wire cutter/stripper
- Screws
The presence of a bathroom mirror light is essential because as everyone knows, the bathroom is one of the most active rooms of the house. The lights attached to a bathroom mirror are very useful in the evening, when the natural light of the sun is diminishing, and since the bathroom is a busy place, light is needed. A possible solution to a dark bathroom is adding light to the existent sources. You can easily add a new mirror light through a loop-in ceiling rose or a junction box, but you can choose to either pass the cable from a junction box that is already installed, or else, a new junction box that you have to install on purpose for this new light. But the easiest choice is breaking into the circuit of the other lights and fitting a new junction box, so that the cable could pass through it.
Step 1 – Starting the Process
Before turning off the main of electric power in order to break into the circuit, you have to make sure that you have prepared all the new components of the circuit. Pass a long 1mm2 cable across the ceiling rose to the point of connection with the circuit. Take the 2 ends of the cable and link the red conductor in the ceiling rose and to the terminal block with the corresponding wire from the switch.
Step 2 - Connecting the Bulb-Holder
Link the brown conductor from the holder to the two-terminal block with the black conductor. Connect also the blue conductor, this time to the three-terminal block, and finally the earth conductors as well. Keep in mind that the conductors are color-coded, and the earth conductor is colored either green or yellow. Hang the brown and blue conductors to the lugs on the ceiling rose in order to avoid tension on the connecting terminals. It is now time to close the box of the ceiling rose and fix it securely with screws.
Step 3 - Switching Off the Electric Power
The electric power should be switched off now for safety reasons. It is time to link the existing circuit to the new one. Leave the main source of electric power switched off and unscrew the ceiling rose in case you want to add the new mirror light to an existing loop-in ceiling rose. Run the cable through the rose and link the red conductors to the three-terminal block, do the same with the blue and black conductor. Link the earth conductors together into the terminal. If you want to run the cable through an existing junction box, the process is the same.
Step 4 - Connecting Circuits through a New Junction Box
After breaking into the circuit, slowly peel the cable and remove its sheath. Do not cut into the conductors as much as possible. Fix the new junction box on a joist and then run the cable over the terminals, with the earth conductor in the middle screw. Put the screws back in place, connect the conductors together, seal the cover of the junction box and switch the electric power back on to test the new circuit.
Bathrooms are often considered to be ideally well-lit and inviting rooms. An excellent way to add light to your room is by installing a new light fixture, and adding a new mirror light will certainly achieve this.
