How to Aovid Getting a Clogged Toilet

by DoItYourself Staff

In order to avoid a clogged toilet, there are some basic rules to follow. Quite simply, some items should never be flushed down the toilet because if you do, you risk clogging your toilet. Items like diapers, Q-tips, large paper towels and excessive amounts of toilet paper should never be flushed down any toilet. Talk to your family about conserving toilet paper and avoid a stopped up toilet. Additionally, some diapers have inserts that break down and are designed to be flushed. If you use these, make sure you break them down completely before flushing.

Courtesy Flushes

If you notice an amount of tissue paper in an otherwise clean toilet, give it a flush. The more paper that is in a toilet when flushed, the better are the chances that it will get clogged.

Upgrades

If you find it necessary, you can upgrade your toilet to accommodate more paper waste per flush. There are also special toilets that dispel waste using high water pressure. These are both options, but if you take the steps to watch what you flush, you should have no problems with a clogged toilet. Additionally, it is possible to make upgrades to your bathroom to provide for a wider outflow pipe or a toilet that uses increased force when dispelling waste.
