How to Apply Insulating Paint to a Closet

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Insulating paint or insulating additive
  • Painters tape
  • Drop cloth
  • Paint brushes and rollers

Insulating paint isn't going to provide as much protection as standard insulation will, but for closets it can increase the energy efficiency in your home. When applied properly some people may save as much as 30% on their yearly home heating costs. Since this paint is made differently than other types of paint, you will need to apply it slightly differently.

Step 1 - Mix the Insulating Material

You can purchase paint already mixed, or save some money and purchase any kind of paint and add the insulating additive. This additive is made of ground ceramic. If you are mixing it you can simply follow the directions provided on the additive.

Step 2 - Prepare the Closet

Remove all clothing and other items being stored. If you are able to remove any closet poles and shelves this will make it much easier as well. You can tape off around the trim near the door if you wish. Lay drop cloths down to cover the floor.

Step 3 - Start Painting

If you get a high quality paint you can start with the ceiling and work your way down. Lower quality paints may drip more, and it's a good idea to do the ceiling last. The actual painting process isn't going to be any different than painting any other wall.
