How to Assemble a Washing Machine Agitator

by DoItYourself Staff

Assembling a washing machine agitator requires several steps in order to accomplish this task. The process for assembling a washing machine agitator is fairly standard for all types of washing machines; variations in these steps for assembling the washing machine’s agitator can be found in the instruction or owner’s  manual for your specific brand of washing machine.

Assembling the Washing Machine Agitator

Gather the various parts to the washing machine agitator together. This includes the lower agitator, cam, dog, upper agitator, agitator stud, internal debris cap and dispenser. The instruction manual will give you a schematic for each of these parts to the washing machine agitator. Inside the washing machine, there is a transmission shaft upon which you need to place the lower agitator on. Rotate the agitator until it locks into place on the transmission shaft. An o-ring should be placed at the top of the lower agitator.

Place the dog into the its corresponding slot on the cam. Place the cam and dog assemblies, of which there should be 4, inside the upper agitator. The upper agitator slides over the lower agitator, locked into place by the agitator stud or bolt. Insert the debris cap and finally the dispenser to complete the assembly of the washing machine agitator.
