How to Attach Baseboard Molding to a Plaster Wall

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Miter box and saw
  • Baseboard molding
  • Drill
  • Hammer and nails
  • Varnish
  • 3 inch steel nails
  • Silicone caulk
  • Safety goggles
  • Work gloves

Follow the steps below to learn how to professionally install a baseboard molding.

Step 1 – Measuring and Cutting Your Baseboard Molding

Take great care in measuring the length of baseboard for each side of the wall. You will require a saw and a miter box for making longitudinal and angular cuts. One of the basic techniques for properly installing a baseboard molding is the use of a miter box for angular cuts. You will need to cut the edges of the molding at an angle of 45 degrees so that the individual pieces join each other neatly at corners.

Step 2 – The Drilling Process

Baseboard molding can be made from a variety of woods. If the molding you choose is an antique or is made up of low quality wood then you need to use a drill to make holes for nails. This ensures that your baseboard does not splice and makes your work more efficient. After all, working on a workbench is easier than bending to use a hammer.

Step 3 – Polishing your Baseboard Molding

Follow this step while the molding is still on the workbench. Coat the baseboard with clear varnish to bring out the texture and shine of the wood. After applying the varnish, leave the molding to dry for an ample period of time.

Step 4 – Installing the Baseboard Molding

Place the baseboard molding along the walls and use the nail gun to force 3-inch steel nails into the holes drilled earlier. After you are done with nailing the baseboard to the wall, use the silicone caulk to fill in any gaps between the wall and the molding.
