How to Build a Bed with Storage Drawers

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Drawer boxes
  • Drawer runners and tracks
  • Lumber
  • Screwdrivers and screws
  • Wood glue
  • Bed risers
  • Tape measure

Learning how to build a bed with storage drawers is a great project for bedrooms lacking space. This piece of furniture provides two important uses; as a platform supporting your bed mattress and as a box spring, as well as containing drawers for clothing and other storage when extra space is sorely needed. It is a great do-it-yourself project that will allow you to express some creativity in choice of wood type, color and design.

Step 1 – Take Careful Measurements
Carefully  jot down bed area measurements making sure you allow at least an inch and a half larger on each side to allow for easy drawer access.

Step 2 – The Drawers
Depending upon the depth of handmade construction you wish to complete in this project, either make your drawers from scratch, or possibly “borrow” them from another piece of furniture. A great place to look is at garage sales or flea markets where even finding an old and slightly abused piece of furniture will provide drawers you can use. You may need to strip the original finish and redo it, but, in the long run, you’ll produce something of beauty of which you’ll be proud. Obtain or build six drawers – three for each side – for king or queen-sized beds.

Step 3 – Construct the Base

Construct the bed base where the drawers will slide using four thick sturdy pieces of wood for the frame. Top the frame with a thick piece of plywood and then flip it over. Make sure the frame is taller than the drawers. Attach a middle bar across the frame.

Step 4 – Make Drawer Supports

Cut smaller wood planks to fit on the inside of the frame where you will attach the drawer runners and tracks. Attach these to the inside top of the frame. Secure a long piece of wood across the original middle piece so it forms a cross-like shape.

Step 5 – Secure the Tracks
Install the drawer tracks using wood screws with a screwdriver. Make sure the tracks fit the attached runners on your drawers. You may need to adjust the tracks to accommodate the runners. Make sure the drawers will slide in and out easily.

Step 6 – Place Mattress and Box Spring
Place the mattress and box spring on the platform making sure the base created is sturdy enough. If so, you may not need to use a box spring but if looking for greater elevation, go ahead.

Tips to Consider

  • Always use protective eyewear and gloves when working with power saws, nailers and screwdrivers.
  • If using wood glue instead of screws, make sure to wipe away any excessive amount and be careful where you apply it.
  • If you build your own drawers, finish these before assembling your bed platform. Allow sufficient drying time before handling and keep on hand additional paint or stain for touch up purposes.
