Building a pot rack from a hanger-rod is a great way to reduce storage problems that occur with pots and pans, as well as allowing the chief easy access to them as they are needed. This is a very simple task, that most people can accomplish within an hour, and it requires very few materials and knowledge of carpentry. Of course, when building this type of pot holder, some attachments may have to made, depending upon each kitchen and intended application. This is a simple, basic design that can be easily modified in order to accommodate any specific need or want.
Step 1: Find the Studs
After you have decided where the pot rack will be placed upon the wall, use the stud finder to locate the studs within the wall. Mark them with a pencil, so that when you go to hang the brackets up, they are easy to find. When doing this step, keep in mind that each stud will be used for a bracket, not just the 2 outer edges. In order to ensure that the rod does not bow or fall, it has to be held up as securely as possible.
Step 2: Attach the Hanger-Rod Brackets
Screw the brackets into the wall with 3 inch screws, making sure that they are secured to each stud within the wall, along the entire length of the rod. Be aware that the brackets should come out of the wall far enough to allow the biggest pot that you have to hang, without sticking out farther than it should be. If you cannot find long enough brackets for this purpose then a back piece of wood can be installed first, which will add even more space between the wall and the rod.
Step 3: Attach the Hanger-Rod
Slid the hanger-rod into place and secure it to the brackets, so no movement can occur. Some brackets will have a built in clamping mechanism, while others have holes for screws. Either way, before attempting to hang any pots or pans onto the holder, be sure to secure it into place.
This is the easiest and most basic way to build a hanger-rod pot holder, but there are numerous other applications that may be encountered. For instance, if a large cupboard is installed on the wall, brackets can be purchased that will attach to the bottom edges, allowing you to run a rod underneath the cupboards, but above the countertop. Each specific job may require a little planning and modifying, but the general steps are all the same. The only difference may be that if you are placing the brackets directly into a cupboard or counter, then small bolts should be used instead of screws, which will allow the hanger-rod pot holder to be secure, and have no chances of falling due to excess weight.
