A privacy fence is both functional and decorative, screening out your private areas from prying eyes of your neighbors or people on the street while looking attractive. There are a number of options for privacy fences available in hardware stores that include pre-fabricated lattice or simple sheets. You can easily install a privacy fence yourself instead of hiring a professional.
Keep these steps in mind to build a 6-foot high privacy fence.
Step 1: Select and Clear Area
Select and measure the area where you want to install the fence so you know how many sheets of pre-fabricated wood and posts you should purchase from your local hardware store. Clear the area of any rocks, roots or debris and collect them in a wheelbarrow to dispose off later.
Step 2: Measure, Mark and Dig Post Holes
Measure the distance between both the top corners of one sheet of pre-fabricated wood and measure and use spray paint to mark the same distance on the ground. Do this until the entire area you want to fence is covered. This will give you an idea of how many support posts you have to dig into the ground.
Use a posthole digger or shovel to dig 2-foot deep and 1-foot wide holes in the marked area.
Step 3: Place Support Posts
Carefully place the 4-by-4 posts into each hole vertically, making sure at least 6-feet of each is above ground. Step back to check all the posts are in level with one another, and adjust the height of a particular one by adding or removing dirt in the hole.
Mix a solution of concrete with water in a wheelbarrow until it has the consistency of ice cream and pour it around the posts so they are secure. Tamp it down with your hands or stick so it settles in place, and allow it to dry overnight.
Step 4: Install Pre-Fabricated Sheets
Standard pre-fabricated sheets are usually 4 feet to 8 feet high, so cut it to size with a circular saw. Hold a sheet between two support posts, making sure their tops are in line with the top of the screen, and drill it into place with galvanized wood screws.
Repeat this process until all your sheets are screwed in place between the posts.
Step 5: Add Finishing Touches to the Fence
Cover the line of nails by installing 1-by-4 inch strips vertically over them. Not only will this cover the nails, but will give your fence a neat and clean look. You can also purchase caps for your posts in a wide range or shapes and designs.
Step back to review your work. Once you are satisfied with the appearance of your privacy fence, you can apply a coat or two of sealant or paint to extend its life and protect it from natural elements. You can even plant climbers such as rose vines that will grow and in time cover your privacy fence with colorful blooms.
