How to Build Your Own Closet Rod Extender

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • A wooden (large enough to fit in closet)
  • 2 wire clothes hangers
  • Nails (or screws)
  • Wire pliers
  • Screwdriver
  • Sandpaper

A closet rod is a great way of saving space in your closet. Using a closet rod extender enables you to move even more of your items into the closet.

Step 1 - Preparing the Rod

If the rod is too long for the closet, trim it down with a saw. Once the wooden rod is ready, sand it down to ensure that it is smooth.

Step 2 - Nailing

Once the closet rod is ready, insert a nail or screw to each end of the rod. Do not screw entirely down, but leave enough space to put the clothes hanger onto the nail.

Step 3 - The Clothes hanger

Take one of your clothes hangers, and twist the bottom bar with the pliers until you have formed a loop. The loop should be fairly small and tight. Do the same with the other clothes hanger.

Step 4 - Putting Together

Take the loop of wire in the clothes hanger, and slide it over the nail so that it is hanging between the nail head and the end of the closet rod. Do the same with the other clothes hanger on the other end, being sure that both hooks on the hangers point the same way.

Step 5 - Finishing

Hang your closet rod extender in the closet.
