How to Calibrate a DLP Projector

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Test pattern DVD
  • DLP projector
  • Television
  • DVD player

A DLP projector is a piece of home entertainment equipment that is very pricey but offers great quality within the home. The DLP projector works in the same manner as a rear projection television and a movie projector. The image is sent to the DLP projector which then projects the image to a screen or wall. One of the main problems with the DLP projector is that it needs to be adjusted when you get it home or else it will never look as good as it did in the store. When any television or projector is shipped to the store they are set with the maximum settings in mind that will allow the unit to perform the best under fluorescent lighting. It is very unlikely that your home uses fluorescent lighting which means you need to adjust the DLP projector and this article will show you how.

Step 1 - Setting the Mood

Think of it as though you are going on romantic date with the DLP projector. Due to the nature of how the projector works it can only be effective in low light situations. If there is too much light in a room then the DLP projector will look washed out and dull. Choose a comfortable seat in front of the screen. It is best if the chair is the one that you normally will be sitting in. Adjust the lighting to how you normally would be watching TV.

Step 2 - Focus

Because the quality of the picture from a DLP projector is based on the distance the projector is from the screen it is important for it to be in focus. Place the DLP projector where you want it to be positioned. It can be on the wall across from the screen or hanging from the ceiling. The further away that the projector is from the screen will mean a greater chance that the picture will not be as smooth or crisp. Make sure there is nothing in the way of the lens. Turn the DLP projector on and insert a DVD or tune into a television station. Freeze the image and study it. Adjust the height of the projector to make sure that the screen is filled the way you want it to be. Change the focus on the projector until the lines are crisp and clear.

Step 3 - Setting Color

These units are set with the maximum features selected. Use the remote and remove all of the optional settings. Sit in the chair you will be using and dim the lights to how you will have them while watching TV. Insert the test pattern DVD into the player and start it. These patterns vary so follow the instructions on screen. It is always a good idea to set all the levels to zero and start with the clean slate. Adjust each level a little at a time. You will have to switch back and forth between the levels until you are satisfied.
