If you suspect that your digital ear thermometer is reading incorrectly, there is a way to easily check and fix the problem.

Step 1 - Prepare

To begin, take a large glass and fill it with ice. Add cold water and stir it to make sure that it is as cold as possible.

Step 2 - Check the Temperature

Now it is time to place the thermometer in the cold water. Without allowing the probe to touch the bottom or sides of the glass, make certain that the full sensing area is covered with water. You must then wait at least 30 seconds or until the reading stops.

At this point, your digital thermometer should read 32 degrees F (0 degrees C). If it does not, then it is reading temperatures incorrectly and needs to be fixed.

Step 3 - Fix the Thermometer Reading

To fix a temperature that is reading incorrectly on a digital thermometer, all you need to do is press the reset button. With many thermometers, this is just a matter of holding down the power button for a few seconds, but you may have to check with your manual to make certain.

Once you have done this, you can perform the test again and all readings should be correct.
