How to Change Chandelier Light Bulbs
what you'll need
- Step ladder
- Light bulbs of the correct wattage
- Protective eye wear
- Leather gloves
- Needle-nose pliers
Changing chandelier light bulbs might not be as easy a task as changing the bulb of a lampshade. You must take extra care and caution, especially when using a ladder. Have another person around in the same room while you work to ensure that you remain safe while standing on the ladder and using electricity.
Step 1 - Turn Off The Power Supply
This step is unfortunately forgotten by many people and can result in serious accidents such as receiving an electric shock, which might be lethal. Therefore before you even lay hands on the chandelier you should turn off its power supply. In most cases, turning off the switch is enough.
Step 2 - Remove The Old Non-Functional Light Bulb
Climb the step ladder, but do not grab the light bulb immediately as it might still be scorching hot. Turn the bulb counter clockwise to unscrew it from its socket. If the light bulb is broken, insert the needle-nose pliers into the rim of the bulb. Spread the pliers’ handles apart and move them in counter-clockwise fashion. Special care should be given when handling shards of glass. (Any shards of glass that might have fallen on the floor should be swept away immediately before you perform any of these steps for safety reasons.)
Step 3 - Insert New Light Bulb In Its Socket
To install the new light bulb, insert it and rotate it in a clockwise fashion. If you are considering an eco-friendly option, you should opt for compact fluorescent bulbs. Not only are they better for the environment, but they also last longer and will reduce your electricity utility bills as they use 75 percent less energy!
Make sure you stop screwing in the light bulb when you feel a little resistance. Another important detail that is worth checking out for is to make sure that the new bulb is of the correct wattage for its corresponding chandelier as all electrical appliances have a set wattage at which they function at their optimum.
Step 4 - Restore Power Source
Once you have installed the light bulb it is safe to turn on the chandelier’s power source. If the bulb/s do not switch on repeat Step 3 and make sure that the bulb has been inserted properly.
Step 5 - Dispose Of The Old Light Bulb Properly
Incandescent (traditional) light bulbs can contain mercury and gases that are harmful to the environment. Think twice before throwing them away in the trash. Nowadays in many localities you can send the bulbs off for recycling. The glass case and even the metal tungsten filament inside the bulb may be salvaged.
Just to be sure you should also check if the tungsten filament has torn. Sometimes the reason why a bulb no longer gives off light could be because it is no longer in complete contact with its socket. Therefore the light bulb would still be viable!
