How to Change Power Steering Fluid
what you'll need
- Car Jack
- Power Steering Fluid
- Screwdriver
- Socket set
Changing the power steering fluid in your vehicle is a relatively simple task. Just take some safety precautions before you begin, and make sure you are thorough in your work. The methods for removing and replacing the fluid depend on the make and model of your vehicle, but you can follow the steps below as a general guide.
Step 1 – Preparing
Remove the filter from the top of the reservoir, and detach the radiator overflow tank. This gives clear access to the reservoir. There should be a hose on the front of the reservoir that you need to remove. Then, plug up the pipe hole of the tank to stop fluid escaping.
Step 2 – The Fluid
Extend the hose that was removed from the front of the reservoir out to a large bottle or container, and place the end inside. Drain the fluid the entire tank.
Step 3 – Raise the Car
Raise the front end of the car using a jack. Turn the wheels to full lock either left or right to start. Fill the reservoir with fresh fluid and as it seeps into the system.
Turn the wheels to full lock in the opposite direction. Keep doing this back and forth for 3 or 4 times each side. Once you see clean fluid coming through the system, you can stop and replace the hoses.
