How to Charge NiMh Batteries

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • NiMH Battery
  • Charger
  • Screwdriver

NiMH batteries, or nickel-metal hydride batteries, are used to power several different types of devices. NiMH batteries have no memory effect, meaning you can recharge these batteries hundreds of times without having to worry about the discharge state. When the time comes that you need to change a NiMH battery there are a few steps you will need to keep in mind. Below are some helpful tips and necessary steps to help you successfully change a NiMH battery.

Step 1 – Timing

Be sure that you keep an eye on your NiMH batteries. When they begin to show signs that they need to be changed or charged, do this immediately. While you can allow your NiMH batteries to completely run out, having good charging practices will allow you to always have batteries available for any of your devices.

Step 2 – Prepare Your Device

Because NiMH batteries are used for so many types of devices, changing one is going to vary. You will need to be sure that you have the necessary tools to take out the batteries. It is wise to first ensure that you won't need more than a screwdriver. If you do, have the additional tools handy.

Step 3 – Removing Batteries

Take off the protective cover from the device to remove your batteries. Have your screwdriver handy in case you run into any screws along the way. Carefully take out the batteries, making sure to gently press down on the side of the spring to prevent from ripping them out. Once the batteries have successfully been removed put them on the charger. If you do not wish to recharge your batteries, then simply toss them out.

Step 4 – Disposing of NiMH Batteries

When you are getting rid of your NiMH batteries, try to recycle them if possible. These batteries are considered to be environmentally friendly, and many parts can be reused.

If you do not wish to recycle your batteries, you can simply throw them away in your trash can.

Step 5 – NiMH Tips

NiMH batteries do best with products that are used often and prone to drain a lot of power quickly. For any items that require batteries but do not get much use, consider using a regular battery. This is because the amount of times that you recharge your NiMH batteries will not have any effect on them whatsoever. When you have your NiMH battery in a device that is not often used, you are wasting the power of your battery. These batteries discharge at a rate of around 1% per day.
