How to Check a Clogged Refrigerator Ice Maker

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Screwdriver
  • Wrench
  • Water

If your refrigerator ice maker is only producing small ice cubes or not even making any ice at all, then it may be clogged. To fix this problem, you need to look at the ice maker determine where the problem could be. Follow the simple steps below to check the ice maker for a clog.

Step 1 - Examine the Ice Maker

Turn off your water supply, and then unplug the refrigerator. Look at the ice compartment on your ice maker. You may notice that there are only small pieces of ice, or that some of the ice cubes have frozen around the machine. If you spot the latter problem, then you can unclog it by scraping off these ice particles.

Step 2 - Check the Water Supply Line

Remove the water supply line by unplugging from the connection. This should be at a cold-water pipe, so follow the line back to where it is attached to the pipe. Unscrew using your wrench, and then take off the pipe. Fish out any obvious debris using the small end of a screwdriver, or flush water through the whole pipe to ensure that it is unclogged.
