How to Check for a Spark Plug Oil Leak

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Clean rags
  • Engine cleaner
  • New gasket or seal
  • Adjustable wrench

Spark plug oil leaks are more common than you may think. A spark plug oil leak often happens near the bottom of the spark plug. There is a seal or gasket directly below it. A spark plug oil leak is harder to spot than leaks in other parts due to the small size of the spark plug and its location. The article below will explain how to check for a spark plug oil leak.

Step 1 – Locate the Spark Plug

Open the hood of the car. The spark plugs are located on the engine. There will be wires attached to them. Do not disconnect the spark plug.

Step 2 – Clean the Area

Wipe the spark plug and the surrounding area down with a rag. If the grime is caked on, then spray the area with engine cleaner. Wait a few minutes, and then wipe it down.

Step 3 – Check for Leak

Turn the car on, and have an assistant rev the engine periodically as you watch the area. If there is a leak, you will see the oil coming up from below the spark plug. Remove the spark plug, and replace the gasket to repair the spark plug oil leak.
