How to Check Your Breaker Box for Problems

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Screwdriver
  • Breaker box
  • Flashlight
  • Fuse
  • Pliers

The breaker box is a place in your home that contains the circuit breakers for that particular area of the home. If you have a garage or utility room, you may be able to find your breaker box there. Other locations include in cupboards below the stairs or in boxes near the front door. Check the breaker box when the power goes out before you call an electrician.

Step 1 - Locate the Breaker Box

When the power goes out in your home, the first step you should take is to locate and check the breaker box. It is a good idea to note the position of your box before the power goes out, as finding it in the dark with a flashlight can be difficult.

Step 2 - See if a Breaker Has Tripped

You may have to remove the case of the breaker box with a screwdriver. Once this is done, check the circuits to see which of the breakers has tripped or popped out. Push this all the way in, and check the lights.

Step 3 - Fix the Breaker

If it does not work, you may need to remove the fuse from the circuit breaker and replace it. Remove any wiring using pliers.
