How to Clean a Microfiber Couch

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Empty spray bottles
  • Mild liquid soap
  • Water
  • Mini vac
  • Feather duster
  • Absorbent sponge or washcloth

If you've been curious about how to clean a microfiber couch, you'll be pleased to know that it's a very simple process. In addition to being very comfortable and resilient, microfiber couches can be successfully cleaned with the aid of a few common household items.

Step 1 - Dust Your Couch

When it comes to how to clean a microfiber couch, the first step in the cleaning process is to give the couch a thorough dusting. To do this, use a mini vac or a feather duster to get rid of any caked-on dust, paying special attention to any difficult to reach crevices. If you don't have either of the aforementioned tools on hand, a vacuum cleaner with brush attachments can also be used to carry out this step. When performing this step, it is generally a good idea to remove the cushions before dusting them, thus ensuring that you're able to adequately dust both sides. Once your couch is completely dust-free, you'll be ready to move on to the next step.

Step 2 - Produce Your Couch Cleaning Solution

Now that your couch has been given a vigorous dusting, it's time to make your cleaning solution. Start this step by combining warm water with a mild brand of liquid soap inside of a clean spray bottle. Once the ingredients have been combined, securely seal the bottle, then proceed to give it a good shaking. You'll know the cleaner has taken shape when it begins to sud. It is generally recommended that you use dish-washing soap when producing this cleaner, but liquid hand soap should be fairly effective as well.

Step 3 - Apply Your Couch Cleaning Solution

Lightly apply your homemade cleaner, paying special attention to any stained or dirt-heavy areas. Once the cleaner has been sprayed on, allow it to set in for 1 to 3 minutes, then use your washcloth or sponge to wipe the couch using circular motions. If you come across any exceptionally stubborn stains, you may substitute the sponge or washcloth for a soft-bristled scrub brush. Should any stains prove unyielding, you may want to try scrubbing them with rubbing alcohol, as it can be very effective in combating stains created by wine, juice and other liquids. As with step 1, it is advised that you clean the cushions and the body of the couch separately in order to ensure that both sides of your cushions receive a proper cleaning. After all dirt has been purged from your couch, gently spray the freshly cleaned areas with a water-filled spray bottle to rinse off your cleaning solution.

Step 4 - Dry Your Microfiber Couch

Having given your couch a good scrubbing, you're ready to carry out the last step in how to clean a microfiber couch. With the aid of a dry washcloth, carefully blot the couch until it is completely dry.
