How to Clean a Stainless Steel Grill

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • A non-abrasive kitchen sponge
  • Non-abrasive appliance cleaner or stainless steel cleaner
  • A grill cover (optional)

The stainless steel grill is great for cooking food for your family or a large party. These magnificent devices provide you with a high quality grill that both looks attractive and will last a long time, if cared for properly. Caring for your stainless steel grill is actually fairly easy once you know what to do. This guide is designed to show you exactly how to clean your stainless steel grill.

Step 1- Precautionary Care

Your first line of defense against a dirty grill is a good grill cover. A good grill cover will protect your grill from dirt and the elements and ensure years of added longevity to your grill. The cover should stay on your grill up until you are ready to use it and then replaced as soon as it cools. This first step will help keep your grill as clean as possible so that only minimal care is required.

Step 2- Knowing What to Use

Knowing what and what not to use on a stainless steel grill will save you money and hardship in the long run. Using the wrong stuff to clean your grill will result in scratches on your stainless steel. Use a non-abrasive kitchen appliance cleaner. You can also find cleaning products made specifically for cleaning stainless steel. This might be your best option, but any non-abrasive kitchen appliance cleaner should do the trick.

Step 3- Cleaning

Wet your grill down with a soft rag. After this is done, apply some of your cleaner to your non-abrasive kitchen sponge and begin gently rubbing in a circular motion. If there are any spots with actual stains, you may need to scrub a bit harder and as long as your scrubber is non-abrasive, this should be okay. Clean the entire surface area in this fashion to make sure every piece of your stainless steel grill is properly cleaned. If it’s been a while since the last cleaning, repeat this step over again to make sure you have succeeded in removing all the dirt and grime from your grill. After you are satisfied with the level of cleanliness, wipe it down with a wet, soft rag to get the soap residue off of your stainless steel grill.

Tips

  • Never use steel wool or any other abrasive material on your grill. Doing so will cause the stainless steel to become scratched and you may need to polish it out. Though sometimes the scratches are too deep for polish and you will just have to live with them.
  • Never attempt to clean your grill while it is still hot.
