How to Clean a Stove Exhaust Hood Filter

by DoItYourself Staff

The stove exhaust hood is placed above some types of stoves, and carries cooking fumes and greases out of the kitchen, and up through a chimney. The hood can sometimes suck in dirt along with the grease, and so it is common to have a stove exhaust hood filter in place to prevent the hood from becoming clogged. Like any other filter, this one can become saturated with dirt itself, making it necessary to clean it.

Wash It

The most simple way of cleaning your filter is to remove it from the hood, and wash it out. Soap and water will do the trick for most filters, and it can then be left on the washing up rack to dry. Once it is completely dry again, you can refit it to the hood.

Dry Clean

If you are reluctant to take the filter out of the hood, there are other ways to remove the dirt. First, get a feather duster, and wipe that around the hood. This will remove cobwebs and similar large pieces of debris. Next, wipe down the mesh of the filter using a liquid anti-bacterial spray and a new dishcloth. This will ensure that all dirt is removed from your filter.
