How to Clean a UV Water Filter

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Muriatic acid
  • 2 Buckets
  • Heavy-duty gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Face Mask
  • Water
  • High-pressure hose
  • Long plastic stirrer

Although many people find it convenient to have a UV water filter at home, maintaining a clean ultraviolet water filter can sometimes be very frustrating as well as costly. Many people change their filters from time to time but you will find that it is cheaper and much more helpful to the environment if you clean the filter yourself and re-use it. Cleaning your ultraviolet water filter is not as hard as you might think. These steps will help you get it done.

Step 1: Well Ventilated Area

Gather all your supplies and go to a well ventilated area. It is suggested that you go somewhere in the outdoors, but if the outdoors are not available make sure the place is well ventilated or else the filter will not clean well.

Step 2: Mixing the Muriatic Acid

Before starting the mixture, make sure you are wearing your safety glasses, heavy duty gloves and face mask as you wouldn’t want to get hurt. Fill one bucket with one half a gallon of water. Fill 2 cups with muriatic acid which can be purchased at pool supply and hardware stores, and slowly pour them into the bucket containing the water. Take the long plastic stirrer and mix well until the mixture is thoroughly blended. When done, put the bucket aside.

Step 3: Spray with a High Pressure Hose and Leave to Soak

To spray debris loose from the ultraviolet water filter, use the high pressure hose. It is important to hose down each side of the ultraviolet water filter, concentrating on areas having rust and calcium build up. Place your ultraviolet water filter into the bucket that contains the muriatic acid solution. After the bucket containing your ultraviolet water filter is placed in a well ventilated area (preferably outside), away from pets and minors, leave it there for 5 days so that the filter soaks in the muriatic acid well.

Step 4: Finishing Up

Take a separate bucket, and fill it up with half a gallon of water. Take the ultraviolet water filter that was placed in the bucket of muriatic acid, and submerge it into the bucket you have just filled with water. Leave it there for approximately 5 minutes. Remove the ultraviolet filter from the bucket and clean by rinsing it thoroughly with the high pressure hose. Now that all of this is done, the ultraviolet water filter is clean and ready to be re-installed into the water filtration system.

As you can see it is not hard to clean your own ultraviolet water filter. It is better for the environment and one should consider doing it as the money saved on buying a new ultraviolet water filter or hiring professionals to clean it up for you, can be spent on other things, or even saved up.
