How to Clean a Wall Tapestry

by DoItYourself Staff

A wall tapestry needs to be cleaned from time to time to remove dust and help the threads retain their color. Here’s how you can clean your wall hanging so that it lasts for many years and continues to look great.

Cleaning a Wall Tapestry

To keep your tapestry free of dust, vacuum it twice a year. To do this, place a brush attachment on your vacuum and vacuum the front and back of the tapestry. If your tapestry is regularly exposed to smoke, vacuum it on a more frequent basis.

If your tapestry gets stained, you should spot clean it. First, you will want to test the fabric's colorfastness by cleaning an inconspicuous corner with a mild dish detergent and water. If no color is removed, using the suds from the soap and a sponge, apply them sparingly and rub gently. Use another clean sponge to remove the suds and its residue.

You can also hand wash your wall hanging in the case that a stain is too large for spot cleaning. This, however, will give your wall hanging a faded, antique look. Use a gentle detergent and wash the wall hanging with cool water. Finish by air drying it on a flat surface.
