How to Clean a Water Softener Salt Tank

by DoItYourself Staff

Cleaning the salt tank of a water softener is an unavoidable chore that needs to be done to keep your water supply soft. Hard water is normal in many areas of the country and a water softener makes it much easier to wash clothing since it dissolves soaps better. It is also better for the plumbing as well as being more pleasant to use.

Step 1—Preparations

You should first wait for the salt level in the water softener to drop to a minimal level before cleaning the salt tank, otherwise you simply waste materials. The power supply should also be disconnected before use. Remove the lid of the tank and empty out any water and brine that remains in it. Dispose of this carefully and do not tip it into the garden as it will kill flowers.

Step 2—Cleaning the Tank

Remove the brine valve chamber by unscrewing the bolts on each side of the tank. There will be a salt plate at the bottom of the tank which will also need to be removed and cleaned. Rinse each part before putting the tank back together. The job can get messy so use necessary precautions. When you refill the tank, use new salt and load it to the limit. When you start it again, it should go through a cycle and then be ready to use.
