How to Clean Aluminum Window Frames

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Nonabrasive washcloths
  • Ammonia
  • Warm water
  • Spray bottles
  • Feather duster

If your home's aluminum window frames have accumulated a fair amount of dirt and debris, you may be curious about how to effectively clean them. Fortunately, with a few basic cleaning tools, your aluminum window frames will be spotless in no time.

Step 1 - Dust Your Window Frames

Before cleaning your window frames, you will need to remove any dust from them. This step can be carried out with either a lightly dampened nonabrasive washcloth or a feather duster. Simply run your dusting tool of choice across the frame in broad, even strokes until all the dust has been successfully purged.

Step 2 - Mix Your Cleaning Solution

Having dusted your aluminum window frames, you are now ready to mix your cleaning solution. Inside of an empty spray bottle, produce a mixture of 1/4 cup of ammonia and 1 cup of warm water. Next, securely seal the bottle and shake it until your cleaning solution takes shape. Lastly, fill a second empty spray bottle with warm water. This will be used to rinse off your cleaning solution once the job is finished.

Step 3 - Apply Your Cleaning Solution

Having mixed your homemade cleaning solution, spray it onto your dirty window frames and allow it to sit for 1 to 3 minutes. Then, use a nonabrasive washcloth to wipe away any caked-on dirt, debris or grime. Once your window frames have been sufficiently cleaned, rinse off your cleaning solution with warm water, then dry the frames with the aid of a dry nonabrasive washcloth.
